Critics
Walt Disney faces many critics for many different reasons. In fact, criticism isnt anything new for Disney. Even the childrens classic film 101 Dalmatians faces many different critics, and a lot of criticism.
Disney accused by Catholic cleric of corrupting children's minds
"A leading Catholic cleric has launched a fierce attack on Disney, claiming it has corrupted children and encouraged greed." The Catholic cleric believes that Disney movies have underlying meanings, which teach children to be greedy. He argues that it "pretends to provide stories with a moral message, but has actually helped to create a more materialistic culture". He believes that the "materialistic culture" over rides the many moral messages in the film.
This critic also "cites films such as Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians that feature moral battles, that get into children's imaginations and make them greedy for the merchandise that goes with them". It seems that this critic believes that when children watch these films, instead of seeing the moral messages like 'good triumphs over evil', all they get out of the movie is the desire for merchandise.
Disney and Religion
Some critics are harsh towards Disney and the topic of religion. One critic even says "Disney has never been friendly toward religion. Religious references in earlier Disney features were mostly limited to obligatory church weddings (e.g., Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians, Robin Hood)".(Catholicculture.org) This critic seems to feel that Disney has never had a good relationship with religion in film. But, seems to feel that the "obligatory church weddings" are a positive.
Positive Feedback
101 Dalmatians has received positive feed back as well. Dave Kehr, a top critic from the Chicago Reader, said "This was the last Disney animated feature (1961) that Uncle Walt lived to see through personally; it can't be a coincidence that it's also the last Disney animated feature of real depth and emotional authenticity." He believes that this film has "real depth and emotional authenticity", and that it does not promote selfishness and greed like others have criticized the film for. Another critic from DVD Review, Felix Gonzalez Jr., says "Buena Vista's 2-Disc Platinum Edition of 101 Dalmatians stands proudly next to its predecessors in quantity and quality, serving up a feast for both children and adults." This critic thinks that this movie is fun for the entire family. A critic from TV Guide's Movie Guide explains that "Three hundred artists worked on this project for three years and came up with one of the best feature cartoons ever produced by Disney Studios." Another critic, Ryan Cracknell, praises Disney saying ""Cute and cuddly" pretty much sums up this canine caper - once you get past the idea of a lady looking to make a coat out of dalmatian puppies." Despite of all the negativity Disney has gotten from various critics, there is still an endless amount of positivity coming towards them for this movie.
